SOLAR CONNECTORS
MC4 Connectors, Branch Connectors and In-Line Fuse Holders
The MC4 connector is the standard plug on a solar module lead. Its job sounds simple, but it has to stay watertight and low-resistance for twenty-five years in the sun, which is why the crimp and the seal matter more than the plastic shell.
MC4-T and MC4-Y branch connectors join two strings into one, and the MC4H puts a 10×38 mm fuse inside the connector body, so a string can be protected in line without a combiner box. The MC4H is rated DC 1000 V and takes fuses up to 30 A.
All bodies mate with standard MC4 connectors. Units carry CE and CCC marking.

Crimp and connect
- Use the matching crimp tool. Pliers flatten the barrel and leave a joint that heats up under load; the MC4 die crimps the four contact points.
- Push the seal on before crimping, and check the contact sits fully home in the housing with an audible click.
- Never separate under load. Isolate the string at the inverter or combiner first; the connector is not a load-break device.

Frequently Asked Questions
A dedicated MC4 crimp tool with the correct die. Pliers crush the barrel instead of forming it, and a poor crimp becomes a hot joint within a season. Most tools also include the unlocking spanner for the connectors.
Isolate the string first, at the inverter or the combiner. Then press the locking tabs with the spanner and pull the halves apart. Never separate them under load; the arc will damage the contacts and can injure the installer.
They mate physically, but contacts and seals differ between manufacturers. Mixing brands on one array is a common cause of hot joints. Where possible, use one brand across the array.
H4 is a different connector design from another manufacturer, with a different contact and housing. They do not mate with MC4 without an adaptor, and adaptors add a joint that can fail.
Yes, but indoors a standard terminal block is cheaper and easier to inspect. MC4 is used where the joint has to be weatherproof and quick to make, which is on the array.
