Four-Pole Automatic Transfer Switches for Generator Backup
An automatic transfer switch is the device that decides where the building gets its power. When the mains drops, it opens the mains side and closes the generator side; when the mains returns and stays stable, it changes back.
Three frames cover 63 A, 100 A and 630 A, all four-pole. The fourth pole switches the neutral, which is what a separately derived generator supply needs, so the load is not tied to a dead neutral.
Sizing follows the load, not the generator nameplate: a transfer switch rated below the load will overheat even when the generator is large enough. Units carry CE and CCC marking.

Size on the load the generator will carry, not on the generator nameplate. The switch has to carry the running load plus the starting surge of the largest motor, and the generator has to be able to supply both.
Where the neutral has to be isolated with the phases, which is usual with a separately derived generator supply or where the installation rules require it. A three-pole switch leaves the neutral connected to the mains side.
An automatic switch senses the mains and changes over by itself. A manual switch needs an operator to move it. These frames are automatic dual-power switches; if you need manual, say so before the order.
The changeover time depends on the controller, the generator start sequence and the load. The switch itself only needs a fraction of a second to move; the delay is normally the generator cranking and stabilising.
Only if the generator has the right output and the installation is arranged for it, which usually means an inlet and an interlock. A portable set plugged into a socket without an interlock risks back-feeding the mains.
