AC, DC or 4-Pole: Which Contactor Range Fits the Circuit
Start with what the contactor has to switch, not with the model number. A three-phase induction motor on an AC supply takes a CJX2 frame sized on AC-3 current. A battery, solar string or 48 V DC bus takes a CJX2-Z frame, because the arc needs magnetic blowout that an AC frame does not have. Where the neutral has to break with the phases, or two single-phase circuits run through one device, it takes a four-pole frame.
Two smaller ranges cover the rest: CJ19 for capacitor banks, where the inrush is far above the rated current, and WTH8 for DIN-rail boards in apartments and small commercial panels.
Whichever range you open, the order needs three things: the frame current, the coil voltage of the control circuit, and the auxiliary contacts the panel logic uses.

ORDERING A CONTACTOR
Frame, Coil, Auxiliary: the Three Lines That Decide the Order
Most wrong orders start on one of these three lines. The frame is chosen on AC-3 current at the supply voltage, and a 5.5 kW motor at 380 V draws about 11.5 A, so the frame is a 12 A or 18 A unit rather than the next size up on the kW table.
The coil is chosen on the control voltage in the panel. A 220 V coil fed from a 380 V control circuit fails in minutes, and a 24 V coil on 12 V simply will not pull in. The coil code is part of the model, confirmed at order.
The auxiliary contacts decide the panel logic: 1NO is enough for a simple start circuit, 1NO+1NC is what a holding circuit with a stop button needs, and 2NO+2NC covers a PLC status input plus an interlock. Ordering them with the contactor keeps the panel from waiting on a second delivery.
Send those three numbers and we return the frame, coil code and auxiliary block, with the terminal layout.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
A standard three-phase induction motor takes a CJX2 frame sized on AC-3 current at the supply voltage, with a coil matched to the control circuit. Add an overload relay for protection and an auxiliary block for the holding circuit. Above 95 A, step up to the CJX2-D or CJX2-F frame.
CJX2 is the standard frame. CJX2N is the economic version for OEM panels where cost matters more than terminal detail. CJX2D follows the LC1D footprint for designs already drawn around that layout. Electrically they cover similar currents; the difference is the mechanical design and the price.
Yes, leave the fourth pole unconnected. The frame is larger and more expensive than a three-pole unit in the same current class, so it is only worth doing when a four-pole frame is already stocked or the circuit may later need the neutral switched.
The digits give the frame current and the auxiliary contacts. In CJX2-5011, 50 means a 50 A frame and 11 means one normally open plus one normally closed auxiliary. CJX2-1210 is a 12 A frame with a single normally open auxiliary, and the 04 suffix marks the four-pole version.
Yes. The CJX2-Z frames take 12 V, 24 V and 48 V DC coils for battery, solar and vehicle control circuits. AC coils are 24, 110, 220 and 380 V. Confirm the coil code on the order; the same frame is built with several coil options.
AC-1 is the resistive rating for heaters and lighting where current is steady. AC-3 is the motor rating and allows for starting current of six to eight times running current. Sizing a motor contactor on AC-1 current is the usual reason contacts weld in the first year.
